Research has shown that Black people have better health outcomes and receive medical care more frequently when they are treated by Black physicians – so in 2020, Bloomberg Philanthropies gave $100 million to America’s four historically Black medical schools to support and increase the number of practicing Black doctors.
Since then, more of their students have graduated. Their residents are choosing to work in underserved communities and in public hospitals. And the schools have been able to leverage our gift to attract historic levels of funding from other donors.
By so many measures, our investment in Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine is a success. And we know we have much more to do where every person, regardless of race, has equal access to quality health care – and where students of all backgrounds can enter the medical field. Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed $600 million to bolster these schools’ endowments to help ensure their long-term financial stability.
Mike Bloomberg is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and three-term mayor of New York City. He serves as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, and as WHO Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. Bloomberg graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School.
Bloomberg LP, the financial technology and media company he launched in 1981, revolutionized the investment industry and now employs some 20,000 people. His foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, works to improve lives through its core focus areas: Public Health, Education, the Environment, Government Innovation, the Arts, and Founders’ Projects including the Greenwood Initiative. He also launched a series of major efforts to help fight the coronavirus in the U.S. and around the world.
